The Ultimate Ayurvedic Detox
At Kurikalakam Ayurveda Hospital, Panchakarma is at the heart of our healing philosophy. Derived from the ancient Sanskrit words “Pancha” (five) and “Karma” (actions), Panchakarma refers to a set of five powerful cleansing and rejuvenation procedures that detoxify the body, balance the doshas (Vata, Pitta, Kapha), and restore optimal health and vitality.
Unlike temporary treatments that suppress symptoms, Panchakarma addresses the root cause of diseases by removing deep-seated toxins (Ama) from the body and mind. It is a complete system of internal purification, designed to eliminate toxins, reset metabolic processes, and boost immunity—making it an essential therapy for both prevention and cure.

Each Panchakarma treatment is chosen based on the patient’s health condition, dosha imbalance, age, and seasonal factors. The five core cleansing procedures include:
1️⃣ Vamana (Therapeutic Emesis)
Purpose: Eliminates excess Kapha dosha from the body
Vamana is a medically controlled vomiting procedure that clears toxins from the respiratory and digestive tracts. It is highly effective for treating asthma, allergies, chronic colds, skin diseases, and obesity.
Used for:
Bronchitis, sinusitis
Psoriasis, eczema
Hyperacidity and digestion issues
Weight management
2️⃣ Virechana (Therapeutic Purgation)
Purpose: Removes excess Pitta dosha from the liver and intestines
Virechana is a gentle purgation therapy that purifies the blood and clears toxins from the gastrointestinal tract. It is particularly effective for liver disorders, skin conditions, hormonal imbalances, and inflammatory issues.
Used for:
Skin diseases like acne, rashes, pigmentation
Liver disorders, hyperacidity
Hormonal imbalances
Chronic headaches and constipation
3️⃣ Basti (Medicated Enema Therapy)
Purpose: Eliminates excess Vata dosha from the colon
Basti is considered the most important Panchakarma treatment, as it nourishes and detoxifies the colon—the seat of Vata. Herbal oils and decoctions are introduced via the rectum to remove toxins and restore balance.
Types:
Anuvasana Basti (Oil enema)
Niruha Basti (Decoction enema)
Used for:
Arthritis, lower back pain
Neurological disorders like sciatica or paralysis
Infertility and menstrual issues
Chronic constipation and digestive issues
4️⃣ Nasya (Nasal Therapy)
Purpose: Clears toxins from the head and neck region
Nasya involves administering herbal oils or powders into the nostrils to clear the sinuses, enhance mental clarity, and balance the senses. It’s particularly effective in treating ENT disorders, migraines, and memory issues.
Used for:
Allergic rhinitis and sinusitis
Headaches and migraines
Hair fall and greying
Sleep disorders and memory loss
5️⃣Raktamokshana (Bloodletting Therapy)
Purpose: Removes impure blood and reduces Pitta and Ama from the bloodstream
This specialized treatment involves the controlled removal of small quantities of blood to treat skin diseases, varicose veins, acne, and inflammatory conditions.
Methods used:
Leech therapy (Jalouka)
Needle pricking
Scraping or cupping techniques
Used for:
Psoriasis, eczema
Urticaria, acne
Hypertension
Chronic inflammatory conditions

1. Purva Karma (Preparation Phase)
Snehana (Internal & External Oleation): Application and consumption of medicated ghee/oils
Swedana (Herbal Steam Therapy): Induces sweating to loosen toxins
2. Pradhana Karma (Main Procedure)
Based on diagnosis, one or more of the five Panchakarma procedures are performed under close supervision.
